23 April is a symbolic date in world literature. It is the date on which several prominent authors, William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. This date was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone to access books.
Thought I would celebrate World Book Day here in Mark My Place! by sharing this delightful set of seven bookmarks which were recently donated to me from a collector in the United States. The bookmarks are from the 1970s-1980's and each one shows the name of the poet and the illustrator. They appear to be reading promotion bookmarks but I have no other information about them. Only one of the bookmarks has any information on the back, and that is a stamp for 'THE BOOKSTALL, 708 Sutter St. San Francisco, CA 94109, (415) 673-5446'
