“Except that awards are competitive, which is a negative thing, they are wonderful for singling out deserving individuals
and bringing their work to the attention of many potential readers who might otherwise have been totally unaware of them".

~ Joyce Carol Oates

LISWA: WA Premier's Book Awards 1997

Picture
In 1997 I was the Director, Public Library Services at the Library & Information Services of Western Australia (LISWA) - now the State library of Western Australia, and was thrilled to attend this wonderful awards event, meet the award-winners, hear their speeches, etc.  It was a very enjoyable evening and a great promotion and acknowledgement of WA's literary talent.

A particular thrill for me at this event was sitting beside and chatting with Sister Victoria Brady who I had long admired.  A great author, academic, activist and past Chair of the Library Board of WA.  A truly amazing woman. After this I met Sister Veronica several times, including at the launch of her superb biography of the great Australian poet Judith Wright, South of My Days, at the University of Western Australia.

I treasure this bookmark as a small but lovely memento of this great book awards occasion, of Sister Veronica Brady and indeed, of my time living and working in the beautiful city of Perth, WA (1997-1999).
