“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”

Indigenous Community Volunteers

Picture
A very beautiful bookmark from Australia showing Aboriginal children and Aboriginal art.

I have previously worked with Aboriginal communities in WA and NT to open or improve existing library services and reading programs.  I have however not as yet been an Indigenous Community Volunteer but it is something I would very much like to do. Here is the Purpose, Vision and Role of Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV) as explained on their website:

Our Purpose:  Indigenous Community Volunteers provides opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to develop community and human capacity to improve their quality of life, health, social and economic wellbeing and inclusion within Australian society.
Our Vision:  Our vision is an Australia where all Australians live in harmony and where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people share the same rights, respect and access to opportunities and rewards, and where their culture is valued and recognised as an asset to Australian society.
Our Role:  ICV facilitates partnerships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the broader Australian community, governments and the private sector to address identified needs. We are a collaborative, grassroots organisation providing access to skills and expertise in urban, rural and remote communities where health, economic and education opportunities are often limited.
