media & Communication bookmarks

“How would your life be different if...You were conscious about the food you ate, the people you surround yourself with, and the media you watch, listen to, or read?
Let today be the day...You pay attention to what you feed your mind, your body, and your life.
Create a nourishing environment conducive to your growth and well-being today.”

- Steve Maraboli, The Power of One

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), formerley Australian Broadcasting Commission, is Australia's public broadcaster.

Launched on 1 July 1932, the ABC has become a much loved part of Australian society and its cultural fabric and is often lovngly referred to as "Aunty". From a single radio service, the ABC developed into a multi-platform media operation and a public broadcaster of international renown, delivering Australian stories and conversations across the nation and to the region.

The ABC Charter, set down by Parliament, requires the Corporation to provide informative, entertaining and educational services that reflect the breadth of the nation.

In the late 1930s the ABC set up 'Listening Groups' in Victoria and then NSW.  These continued on successfully through the 1940s and 1950s and were especially valued during and after the years of World War 2.

This bookmark which I purchased on eBay for my collection, explains about the Listening Groups.

I love this bookmark because it represents an Australian icon — the ABC and one of it's great community initiatives and it also represents an important a part of Australia's radio history.  I also like the retro design of the bookmark and the fabulous image of the people sitting around a floor radio in the days before television.
